An author, speaker, innovation mentor and columnist, McKinney has held technology and innovation leadership positions in a number of leading companies, including serving as the vice president and chief technology officer for Hewlett-Packard’s Personal Systems Group, where he was responsible for long-range strategic planning and research and development for all of the company’s PC product lines. He has also served as Senior Vice President and CIO at Teligent, and Director at CSC.

McKinney recently published his first book, “Beyond The Obvious,” a practical guide to consistently generating innovation. McKinney also writes a column for Forbes called “The Objective,” hosts a popular “Killer Innovations” podcast that CIO Insight has called “a must listen,” and tweets from his @philmckinney handle. He has been profiled or had his work on innovation written about in media outlets, including Vanity Fair, BusinessWeek, Fast Company, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Laptop Magazine named him as one of the “25 Most Influential People in Mobile Tech” in 2010.

McKinney serves on the board of directors for The Computer History Museum and on the Executive Board of the Santa Clara County Council for the Boy Scouts of America. He also serves on the advisory board for Hacking Autism, a group focused on developing technologies for children on the autistic spectrum.

McKinney replaces Dr. Paul Liao, who has led the laboratory since June 2009. Dr. Liao announced in October 2011 that he would not renew his contract, which was set to expire in December.

Brazil: Lenovo to acquire companies and hire employees for building PC facilities.

Lenovo’s Asia-Pacific and Latin America president, Milko Van Duijl, told Dow Jones in an interview that the PC maker is looking to set up a permanent shop in Brazil in a bid to lower import costs and produce PCs locally. The move could see thousands of local workers employed by the company.

Van Duijl said in regards to acquisitions: “We are interested in buying or working with all the players, though we are not singling out any one of them.” 


The news comes from Hong Kong:  Lenovo Group Ltd. is keen on acquisitions in Brazil as the Chinese personal computer maker looks to boost its market share in key emerging markets other than China where it is already the biggest supplier of PCs by shipments.
The world's second-largest PC maker after Hewlett-Packard Co. is also currently evaluating a plan to set up a manufacturing base in Brazil so that it can produce PCs locally and avoid high import tariffs, Lenovo's president of Asia-Pacific and Latin America, Milko Van Duijl, told Dow Jones Newswires in a recent interview.
"We are interested in buying or working with all the players (in Brazil), though we are not singling out any one of them," when it comes to acquisitions, Van Duijl said.
He also said that the company cannot be competitive in Brazil without a local manufacturing base. "When you have to add (taxes) to your cost in a PC business where margins are very small, there is no chance in life to be successful."
The executive's comments came amid growing concerns over a slowdown in China's economic growth. Lenovo, the biggest player in China's PC market with a 30% share, has been redoubling efforts to expand in other emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, where demand is expected to rise among consumers buying PCs for the first time.
Lenovo said it became the No. 1 PC brand in India for the first time in the quarter that ended in March, with a 15.8% share. The company sees room for growth in Latin America, where its presence remains relatively small. In Brazil, Lenovo is the No. 9 player with a market share of 3.6% at the end of March, and the business currently is not profitable.
Van Duijl noted that Brazil has recently overtaken Japan to become the world's third largest market for PCs after China and the U.S. in terms of shipments.
Lenovo has been outperforming rivals in the global PC market even though demand for traditional PCs has been sluggish compared with the growing popularity of mobile Internet devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Lenovo's PC shipments in China rose 23% in the quarter, while shipments in other emerging markets jumped 50%. Despite the tough macroeconomic climate, the company's worldwide PC shipments rose 44% in the quarter ended March 31, compared with 5% industrywide growth.
In the quarter, Lenovo's net profit rose 59% from a year earlier to $67 million, while revenue rose 54% to $7.5 billion, drawing a stark contrast to profit declines at H-P and rival Dell Inc. 
Over the past few years, Lenovo, which acquired International Business Machines Corp.'s (IBM) PC business in 2005, has grown through acquisitions. The company effectively took control of the PC business of Japan's NEC Corp. (6701.TO) last year by taking a 51% stake in their joint venture, investing $175 million. Lenovo's market share in Japan, including the portion held by the joint venture with NEC, stood at 25.2% in the quarter that ended March, compared with less than 10% before the tie-up with NEC.
Last year, Lenovo also acquired a majority stake in German computer and consumer electronics maker Medion AG in a cash and stock deal valued at up to EUR465 million.
While seeking growth without acquisitions remains an option in Brazil, "it takes longer to set it all up," Van Duijl conceded. "Particularly in those kind of markets, you need to look at whether you do it yourself or you do it with others."
Van Duijl said that Lenovo will continue to focus primarily on PCs for growth in emerging markets such as Brazil, even though the company has been diversifying its offerings in China to sell smartphones, tablet computers as well as smart televisions with Internet capabilities. Lenovo plans to spend about $800 million on a new facility in the central Chinese city of Wuhan to develop and produce smartphones and tablets.
In those new product categories, "we believe that we need to become the No. 1 player in China first," Van Duijl said. He added that Lenovo can do so by leveraging its brand value and reputation in the Chinese market.
"When that goes well, you can take your products outside China with much higher success rates."

The Open webOS project Blog  has posted an update  about what are they doing at this time on the webOS Open source project, how is Enyo moving ahead, adding new members to the team and keeping September as the target for Open webOS 1.0 release.

This month the Open webOS team is hard at work. Although there aren’t any scheduled code releases for May we are working hard in three areas. 

1.       We are still on target for the September release of Open webOS 1.0. and growing our relationship with the community, including our continued collaboration with the WebOS internals team. More news on that to follow next month. We were also delighted to be featured in LinuxPro magazine for the Isis browser we released last month. http://www.linuxpromagazine.com/Online/News/Isis-Browser-Code-Released

2.       Our sister project Enyo is moving ahead full steam as well. Momentum has been growing behind Enyo and we are looking to increase its visibility by sponsoring the upcoming Fluent conference in San Francisco. I will be presenting “Enyo - A truly cross-platform JavaScript app framework” and Ben Combee will be presenting “A Deeper Look at the Enyo JavaScript Framework”, so come out and meet with us. We’re excited to meet more JavaScript engineers and look forward to demonstrate Enyo’s latest features. (See their brief profiles below after the break)

3.       In addition to the Enyo open source engineering effort, our cloud services organization is beginning development on a set of Enyo API’s.  While we don’t yet have specific functionality to share or a timeline for delivering these new services, we want to let you know that we’re thinking creatively about how all of webOS’s capabilities can come together to add value to the developer experience.

To make all this happen, we are adding more members to our team. If you would like to contribute to the success of Open webOS (and get paid for it) please check out our job listings. And of course, all are welcome to contribute to the code through Github.

As we move into summer, expect us to increase our outreach out more and more, as we present our vision for Open webOS and Enyo to the world. This week I am attending the Open Source Business conference in San Francisco and we are busy planning other events that we will be attending. Local meetups are continuing and I’m looking forward to attending the Chicago WebOS meetup on June 3rd and speaking at the Nodejs meetup on June 19th.

Ben Combee (HP / Palm) 
Ben Combee is the techie face of the HP webOS framework team, both as a coder and presenter. He been doing developer activities as part of the Palm & webOS world since leading the Codewarrior for Palm OS team at Metrowerks in the early 2000′s. He’s also worked at Mozilla in their mobile browser and done open source hardware hacking with NYC Resistor in Brooklyn.



Adam Crabtree (webOS Enyo Framework Team)
Adam Crabtee works for HP webOS on node.js supporting the Enyo.js framework. He runs BayNode, and founded Dallas.node. He authored an asynchronous trycatch library for node.js, and is working to bring package management to the browser via tiki.js. Currently, he is working on Hermes, a pluggable VFS back-end and API for Ares, the Enyo.js browser-based IDE.

As a veteran of the mobile industry with over a decade at Palm, Enda leads the Developer Relations team at HP that supports both the Enyo and Open webOS product lines. In2010, he began working on Palm’s line of PDAs and smart phones, ultimately returning to his passion for web technologies with the introduction of webOS. There doesn’t seem to be a specific area they’re targeting as all the photos came from different parts in and just out of the city centre. 

The ad does show the Galaxy S III as coming in two colours, meaning that you’ll likely see the white version launch there first and the “Pebble Blue” version launch there later once supply isn’t so limited. 

The official launch date for the Australian Galaxy S III was set for Thursday, and all the details on its availability in the country will emerge at that time.

London: Samsung and Carphone Warehouse roll out Galaxy S3 pop-up internet cafès.

The company is set to launch two pop-up stores in London at the time of the smartphone's release, that is  May 30th.


The ‘Samsung Mobile PIN' will come to Westfield in Shepherd's Bush and Old Spitalfields Market.

Samsung say the stores will offer "an immersive, premium pop-up experience", as customers browse the manufacturer's smartphones, tablets, TVs, notebooks and digital cameras.

"We've focused on providing our customers with the opportunity to discover the best new technology available while demonstrating how our products interact together". says Samsung.

Cashing in on the Olympics build-up as well as the S3 launch, the stores will host a series of events including the chance to meet Olympic athletes.

The phone is set to launch on the 30th of May across the United Kingdom. All the major mobile phone networks (including Talkmobile) have confirmed that they will be stocking the handset. The Galaxy S3 is available from £500 on SIM Free and from £26 per month on Pay Monthly.

Carphone Warehouse has launched the world's first ever smartphone-powered pop-up internet cafe at its flagship store on Oxford Street, London.

The cafe, which will be open for the next two days this week (Tuesday and Wednesday), has replaced the store computers with Galaxy S3 handsets - while the devices themselves will be available to buy in-store from Thursday.

The facility allows customers to play with one of Samsung's ‘PC power' Galaxy S3 smartphones before they officially go on sale in the UK. Spicing up the affair, one lucky visitor will win an S3 of their own each day.

The internet cafe will run from 10am until 8pm GMT on Tuesday, and 8am until 4pm GMT on Wednesday, so get down there if you're interested.

The Galaxy S3 has been the fastest selling product ever at Carphone Warehouse and the retailer has offered the handset on preorder with £75 worth of freebies. Samsung also rolled out pop-up stores across London at some of the most popular commercial locations in town.

LONDON, May 28. 12 (CNA / EWTN News). - A group of scientists succeeded in Haifa (Israel), remove skin cells from two men with heart failure 51 and 61 years and turn them into heart muscle.

The study was released Wednesday by the journal "European Heart Journal." The team said that clinical trials of the technique could begin within 10 years.

Lior Gepstein, the "Institute of Technology Technion-Israel and author of the research, said it has been shown" that you can take skin cells from an elderly patient with advanced heart failure and end up getting in the laboratory cells that beat, healthy and youngequivalent to their heart cells when just born. "

Reportedly, the scientists studied for over ten years, stem cells from various sources to capitalize on its ability to transform into a variety of other cell types and treat various diseases.

There are two main forms of stem cells, embryonic death involving embryonic and adult and induced pluripotent (iPS called), which usually come from the skin or the blood and do not involve ethical issues.

In statements to CNA, the specialist in medical genetics, Yasser Sullcahuamán, highlighted the use of adult stem cells because they create an ethical conflict.

"They do a lot of work to avoid this ethical problem where an individual (embryo) becomes a means not an end," he said. He said that the dignity of the embryo is protected not only "by the Church, but for us as human beings, respect for the individual as part and supreme goal of society."

Sullcahuamán, who works at the National Institute of Diseases Neeoplásicas (INEN) of Peru, said that life begins at the time of fertilization. "Therefore we could not manipulate embryonic stem cells," he said.

The scientist said that "we could handle another group of cells that are just as promising as are stem cells that originate from adult tissues, where there would be no ethical confrontation of any kind because they are cells that we are going to differentiate and which could cure many diseases, including diabetes, heart attack or stroke. "

This is not the first science to adult stem cells. In April 2007 a team of scientists led by Sir Magdi Yacoub in London managed to create a fabric that works as a heart valve based on adult stem cells.

Also in March 2009 it was announced that the girl Dakota Clarke, two years old, recovered his sight by treatment with adult stem cells from umbilical cord. Treatment provided in a hospital in Qingdao, China.

El estudio fue divulgado el miércoles por la revista "European Heart Journal". El equipo de científicos indicó que los ensayos clínicos sobre la técnica podrían comenzar dentro de 10 años.

Lior Gepstein, del "Instituto de Tecnología Technion-Israel y autor de la investigación, dijo que se ha demostrado "que es posible tomar células cutáneas de un paciente anciano con insuficiencia cardíaca avanzada y terminar obteniendo en el laboratorio células que laten, saludables y jóvenes, equivalentes a sus células cardíacas cuando apenas nacieron". 

Según se informó, los científicos estudiaron durante más de diez años las células madre de varias fuentes para capitalizar su capacidad de transformarse en una amplia variedad de otros tipos celulares y tratar varias enfermedades. 

Hay dos formas centrales de células madre, las embrionarias que implica la muerte de embriones y las adultas o pluripotentes inducidas (conocidas como iPS), que suelen provenir de la piel o la sangre y no comportan problemas éticos.

En declaraciones a ACI Prensa, el especialista en genética médica, Yasser Sullcahuamán, destacó el uso de células madre adultas porque no generan un conflicto ético.

"Se hacen muchos trabajos para evitar este problema ético donde un individuo (el embrión) pasa a ser un medio y no un fin", señaló. Indicó que la dignidad de los embriones está protegida no solo "por la Iglesia, sino por nosotros como seres humanos, el respeto al individuo como parte y fin supremo de la sociedad".

Sullcahuamán, que labora en el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neeoplásicas (INEN) del Perú, afirmó que la vida empieza en el momento de la fecundación. "Por tanto no podríamos manipular las células madres de origen embrionario", señaló.

El científico dijo que "podríamos manipular otro grupo de células que son igual de prometedoras como son las células madre que se originan en tejidos adultos, donde no habría ningún enfrentamiento ético de ningún tipo porque son células que nosotros vamos a diferenciar y con las cuales podríamos curar muchas enfermedades, como la diabetes, los infarto de miocardio o los accidentes cerebro-vasculares". 

Este no es el primer logro científico con células estaminales adultas. En abril de 2007 un equipo de científicos liderados por Sir Magdi Yacoub logró en Londres generar un tejido que funciona como una válvula cardíaca en base a células estaminales adultas.

Asimismo, en marzo de 2009 se anunció que la niña Dakota Clarke, de dos años de edad, recuperó la vista gracias a un tratamiento con células madre adultas del cordón umbilical. Tratamiento que se realizó en un hospital de Qingdao, China.

Dell is looking to readdress the tablet space with Windows 8. 

According to a leaked document obtained by Neowin, Dell will launch a 10.1 inch tablet with 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution and a dual-core Atom processor Intel Clover Trail later this year. 

The slate will also be equipped with a fingerprint reader, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Intel graphics, 2GB of RAM and a massive 128GB solid-state drive.

 Unlike many other tablets, Dell has included a removable battery that will come in two sizes.

 A smaller battery will get between six and eight hours of battery life, while a larger one will offer between 10 and 12 hours of usage per charge. The tablet is rumored for a late fall launch, and no pricing details were reported.

Foxconn “has received orders for the Apple TV, and is currently in trial production stage,” reports China Business News (via Business Insider). 


The unconfirmed data comes just over two weeks after Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou was reportedly mistranslated as saying that his company, as well as Japanese partner Sharp, had begun “making preparations” for the production of an iTV. No additional information on date of release has yet been put forth.

Customers who are willing to commit to a long-term contract can purchase the Nokia Lumia 900 for as low as 195 USD (155 EUR). Those who want to avoid being tied by a long-term plan can grab the smartphone for 665 USD (530 EUR) upfront via Nokia Stores.

However, the folks at WPCentral report that the Lumia 900 is also available for “approximately 720 SGD at some stores such as Adix,” which is about 565 USD (450 EUR).


According to Facebook Nokia page, the first five customers who purchased the Lumia 900 also received a free Xbox 360 Kinect Holiday Bundle. 


Obviously, Nokia fans living in Singapore will be able to grab the international version of Lumia 900, which means no LTE support will be available. 

However, the rest of the specs are similar to the AT&T variant, so expect the same stunning 4.3-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen integrated with ClearBlack display and Corning Gorilla Glass coating.

On the inside, the smartphone packs a single-core 1.4 GHz Qualcomm APQ8055 Snapdragon processor, an Adreno 205 GPU, 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory. There’s also an impressive 8-megapixel rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics, dual-LED flash, autofocus and HD (720p) video recording.
