Well, that is in Europe.

Now in the USA, Sprint  today formally unveiled Sprint Velocity, a comprehensive global end-to-end solution designed specifically for automakers as part of the Technology Showcase at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show. Sprint introduced its Sprint Velocity service to a packed audience of automotive media and auto industry executives during the show’s Press Days.

Sprint Velocity is a pioneering capability that encompasses the development, integration and marketing of in-vehicle communications systems. Automakers can use Sprint Velocity as a complete turnkey solution or on a modular basis to suit their customized needs.

During the press conference, Sprint executives showcased how Sprint Velocity helps auto manufacturers more easily integrate the complex components and vendor relationships needed to provide the best in connected services in autos and passenger trucks – whether it’s music, news, weather, sports and other infotainment features, security, navigation, remote connections for mobile devices, emergency services and engine diagnostics. “Sprint Velocity enables auto manufacturers to customize the variety of connected features inside the vehicle, through the simplicity of a single point of mobile integration and enablement,” said Wayne Ward, vice president-Emerging Solutions, Sprint. “Automakers simply collaborate with Sprint on the specific features they desire for their vehicles and Sprint will handle the rest. According to Machina Research, 90 percent of new passenger cars are expected to have some of form of connectivity platform by 2020. Machina forecasts the connected cars market will reach $600 billion by 2020, the largest category in a $4.5 trillion market for connected devices and services.*

With Sprint Velocity, automakers have the potential to generate new sources of revenue while economizing on cost, because Sprint can handle the entire mobile integration of the in-car experience. Sprint Velocity also helps build better customer loyalty between the automaker and the consumer by developing deeper, ongoing relationships with their customers directly.

Just in time for the holidays, the Samsung Galaxy Note II will be available for purchase online and in stores starting tomorrow, Nov. 29. Customers who pre-ordered the Galaxy Note II will receive an e-mail alert when their device has been shipped. Customers have the option of two color models, Marble White or Titanium Grey and can pick up the Samsung Galaxy Note II for $299.99 with a new two-year customer agreement.
Beginning today, the Samsung Galaxy Note II is available for pre-order. The Galaxy Note II combines the features of a smartphone and tablet, giving users the best of both worlds with its large yet pocketable 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED screen.
The built-in S-Pen does more than just draw pictures. A student looking to take notes in class can use the handwriting-to-text feature to jot down their notes and attach an audio recording of the lecture. With AirView, the S-Pen can hover over an e-mail or gallery to preview content without opening it. Easy Clip lets users draw an outline and crop what’s on the screen with the S-Pen and share that cropped image with others.
The Note II allows users to run two apps simultaneously by dividing the screen in the Multi Window view. Users can stream YouTube videos while texting a friend, taking notes or writing down an address while on a phone call. Pulling out the S-Pen during a phone call will bring up the Popup Note feature to quickly write and save notes instead of looking for a pen and paper.

ZTE has announced the launch of their  Energy Saving Solution to help operators globally reduce energy consumption in their LTE  networks. According to test results, a single site employing this solution can save up to 40% in power consumption. Company plans to increase resources for LTE development and green technologies.

Based on test results, ZTE’s Energy Saving Solution can generate energy savings of as much as 32 percent on a single site. Annual reduction of as much as 5,200KwH can be achieved on a typical 1,500W base station. 

For a network comprising 1,000 base stations, the annual reduction would amount to 5.2 million Kwh, reducing 4500 tons of carbon dioxide emission. When combined with the deployment of renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy or bio-energy, energy savings of more than 50 per cent of the entire network can be achieved.

The global information and communication technology industry accounts for as much as 2.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to research firm Gartner Inc. In a typical wireless telecommunications network, about 90 percent of the energy is consumed by base stations.

COSMOTE, mobile network operator in Greece, has opened commercial 4G LTE mobile broadband network in Athens and Thessaloniki. Company has also started offering data plans through 4G Tablets and USB Sticks.

“COSMOTE’s 4G network already covers the majority of municipalities in the regions of Attica and Thessaloniki, while the gradual development of the network is ongoing.

 Soon, COSMOTE 4G will be available in more Greek cities”, stated the General Technical Director of COSMOTE, Mr Giorgos Tsoni.

The new 4G COSMOTE network is available for data uploading and downloading initially through 4G tablets and USB sticks to customers who subscribe to the new COSMOTE Internet On The Go 20GB program tariff plan, and will also be available as an option with the existing COSMOTE Internet On The Go 5GB, 10GB, Student and COSMOTE Internet Any Way 5GB plans.

LTE: Kuwait: Zain announced the launch of its 4G LTE network


Zain Kuwait has announced the launch of its 4G LTE network nationwide. Operator's Wiyana Connect 4G LTE plan is available for compatible mobile phones, tablets, routers, hotspots and dongles in 1800 MHz band.

“We are very proud to launch the new service that will provide the fastest mobile internet speeds to our customers all over Kuwait exclusively from Zain. This service is available for the first time nationwide,” said Zain Kuwait CEO Omar Alomar.

Operator is currently offering two LTE plans: 35GB capacity plan with monthly price KD 24 and 80GB capacity plan with monthly price of KD 33.

Telefonica’s Brazilian unit plans to launch LTE services in April 2013, according to the CEO of the country’s largest operator.

Outlining the carrier’s aim to upgrade its 3G HSPA network, Paulo Cesar Teixeira told delegates: “We will have 4 cities in April next year and then another 6 nearby cities.” Teixeira said the chosen cities will be those that are scheduled to host World Cup games in 2014.

The LTE service will be branded ‘4G Plus,’ a natural progression from its existing 3G Plus service.

In June this year Telefonica’s Brazilian unit – Vivo – purchased 2x20Mhz chunks of LTE spectrum in the 2.6GHz frequency band. It paid around BRL1.05 billion (US$500 million) for the spectrum. In total the country netted BRL2.72 billion from winnings bids from Vivo, America Movil’s Claro, TIM Brasil and Oi.

Although the largest operator, Vivo may not be first to market with Brazilian LTE services. Number four operator Oi last month outlined plans to achieve 50 percent coverage in seven Brazilian cities also by April 2013.

NTT DOCOMO has developed a dual-mode small-cell base station, or femtocell, supporting 3G (W-CDMA) and LTE simultaneously. The dual-mode femtocell will be commercially launched from December and offers for improved service coverage in indoor locations such as offices, shops and homes.

According to company its new femtocell, which weighs only 0.7 kg and measures just 18.5cm by 17.5 cm by 4.5 cm (H x W x T), provides 3G/LTE service coverage in a range of up to several tens of meters, depending on actual conditions. 

Its plug-and-play function automatically configures itself to the surrounding radio environment, enabling users to quickly enjoy wider, higher-quality and more cost-effective coverage simply by connecting the femtocell to a broadband fixed line.

DOCOMO has been marketing 3G femtocells for improved indoor coverage since 2007. With the new dual-mode 3G/LTE femtocell, DOCOMO looks forward to providing enhanced indoor environments for voice and data mobile communication via its FOMA™ 3G and Xi™ LTE services.

LTE: UK 4 mobile operators formed a company to speed up to 800MHz.

The UK’s four mobile network operators have formed a company to speed up the deployment of the 800MHz frequency band vacated by the Digital Switchover.

Regulator Ofcom announced early October that the spectrum, which will be used to roll out LTE services will be made usable earlier than planned, following peace talks between the UK government and the nation’s operators.

Following those talks, Everything Everywhere, Telefónica O2, 3UK and Vodafone have formed Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited, a jointly-controlled company. It will be responsible for ensuring that consumers continue to receive clear Freeview TV signals following the launch of in the 800MHz band.

“Creating the company now will further accelerate the rollout of competitive 4G services next year,” Ofcom said in a statement. “It will be funded by the successful bidders for 800MHz spectrum in the forthcoming auction.”

The regulator added that provisions exist to make sure that if any other party acquires some of the spectrum in the auction, they can immediately become a shareholder in the company.

IT industry veteran Andrew Pinder CBE has been appointed to act as interim chairman of Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited.

Brazilian operators Vivo and Oi have named the suppliers for their LTE networks. Vivo, Telefonica’s subsidiary in the country, has announced that Swedish vendor Ericsson will supply and implement its 4G network in the North and Mid-Western regions of Brazil, as well as the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia and Sergipe.

Ericsson will also be responsible for network implementation, including network rollout, design and support services. Ericsson has implemented Vivo’s GSM, WCDMA and HSPA technologies in the past.

Rival Oi has also selected Ericsson, along with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) and Alcatel Lucent for its LTE network, the operator told local reporters according to Reuters. Ericsson said that with these deals it has now signed 89 LTE contracts across 38 countries.

The news follows a report from the GSMA, which claims that mobile services will shape Brazil’s economic future. The country is the fourth largest mobile market in the world with more than 260 million active mobile connections, 60 million of which are mobile broadband, according to the association. It is set to maintain a strong pace of growth and reach 135 million mobile broadband connections by 2014.

Telenor launched its 4G LTE network in 11 cities and towns in Norway, stating that by the end of 2012 more than one-in-three of the population will be covered.

The company is initially targeting tablet and computer users, although the company is promising handsets imminently – “4G mobile phones are now being stocked by retailers”, said Berit Svendson, CEO of Telenor Norway.

Rival TeliaSonera, which operates in Norway under the NetCom brand, has already deployed LTE networks in the country.

Telenor also said it is extending its 3G coverage, to provide access to mobile data services where 4G infrastructure is not deployed.

The company has switched on its 4G network in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Lorenskog, Sandnes, Lillestrom, Asker, Baerum, Lofthus in Hardanger and Longyearbyen.

By the end of 2012, coverage will be extended to Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Skien, Porsgrunn, Drammen and Kristiansand. Tromso will be added in the first quarter of 2013.

“The current rapid development of digital services places increased requirements on the mobile network, and with 4G we are taking an important step towards increased capacity and faster speeds,” Svendson said.

EE has confirmed it will officially launch the UK’s first 4G service at the end of this month, announcing the availability of a range of handsets that will be compatible with the new network.

EE is the new 4G brand recently introduced by the country’s largest operator, Everything Everywhere, owner of the UK arms of T-Mobile and Orange.

While the operator had earlier pledged to switch on 4G-LTE in 16 UK cities by year-end, it appears to have held off on announcing an official launch date while regulator Ofcom was involved in ‘crunch’ talks with rival operators.

Ofcom announced earlier this week that all the country’s mobile operators should be in a position to launch LTE services using new spectrum from spring 2013, five months earlier than previously planned. This was seen as an attempt to appease Vodafone and O2, which had been angered by Ofcom’s controversial decision to allow EE to refarm its 1800MHz spectrum for LTE – and therefore launch 4G ahead of rivals.

“This is a significant milestone for the United Kingdom, and for the people and businesses of our country who will now be able to enjoy the huge advantages of superfast 4G technology for the first time,” said EE CEO Olaf Swantee .

EE will launch 4G in ten cities on the 30 October, and will cover 16 cities – a third of the UK population – by the end of the year. It is aiming for 98 percent coverage by 2014.

From today, the 4G ready Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE, HTC One XL and Huawei Ascend P1 LTE will be available to buy on Orange and T-Mobile 3G price plans. They join the iPhone 5 which was launched recently. Once 4G launches, Orange and T-Mobile customers with 4G ready handsets can then choose to move across to the new 4G EE customer brand or remain on the existing 3G network.

UK regulator Ofcom has confirmed that all of the country’s mobile operators should be in a position to launch LTE services from spring 2013, five months earlier than previously planned.

In a statement yesterday, the regulator noted: “Following discussions with TV broadcasters, Digital UK and the transmission company Arqiva, Ofcom has secured the earlier release of frequencies that were previously used for digital-terrestrial broadcasting. This spectrum will now be cleared and ready for 4G mobile services across much of the UK five months earlier than previously planned, from spring 2013. This has only become possible in the past few months as a result of the significant progress that has been made to date with the digital switchover and the clearance programme itself, which has been running ahead of schedule.”

Specifically, Ofcom said that the clearance date for TV transmitters in Oxford and Waltham – which would otherwise prevent deployment of 4G mobile services to around 9 million people in cities including London, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham and Sheffield – will be brought forward by five months to May 2013. Similarly, the clearance date for transmitters which impact around 1 million people in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh will be brought forward by more than three months to April 2013.

This progress comes in the same week that Ofcom has held “crunch meetings” with UK operators. The meetings appear to have been an attempt to appease Vodafone and O2, which have been angered by Ofcom’s controversial decision to allow market-leader Everything Everywhere (EE) to refarm its 1800MHz spectrum for early LTE services – and therefore launch 4G ahead of rivals. Last month EE launched a new 4G brand and pledged to launch LTE services in 16 UK cities by Christmas.

Auctions in the ‘digital dividend’ 800/2600MHz bands suitable for 4G are expected to start in December, with official bidding taking place early in 2013.

Brazil’s number four operator Oi is to invest BRL1 billion (US$493 million) in developing an LTE network in the country between now and 2015 and plans to achieve 50 percent coverage in seven Brazilian cities by April 2013.

Oi’s chief executive Francisco Valim made the comments during the launch of a network using the new technology in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro, yesterday. Valim said the company will sign supplier contracts for 4G technology on October 16.

Oi’s plans come as Latin America’s largest mobile market is required to build-out 4G coverage in the host cities for the 2014 football World Cup, which is being held in Brazil.

In June the country’s four largest mobile operators all acquired 4G spectrum in auctions, netting BRL2.72 billion in total for the government. Telefonica’s Vivo submitted the highest winning bid (BRL1.05 billion), followed by America Movil’s Claro (BRL844.5 million), TIM Brasil (BRL375 million) and Oi (BRL345 million). 4G spectrum was up for grabs in both the 2.5GHz and 450MHz bands, suitable for urban and rural coverage respectively.

French mobile operator SFR plans to launch 4G LTE service on 28 November this year. The operator had earlier scheduled the launch in early 2013 but now it has advanced the launch date. SFR will introduce LTE first in Lyon followed by other cities.

Operator had started 4G deployments during this year including Lyon and Montpellier and currently doing advanced pilot.

SFR also announced that its 3G+ (HSPA) network now covers 98.6% of the population and will reach the level of 99.3% population at the end of 2013. Operator also plans to provide Dual Carrier HSDPA + (DC-HSDPA+) coverage to 60% of the population by the end of 2012. Operator had started DC-HSDPA + deployments in 2011.

LTE: Mexico: Telefonica to deploy LTE in October.

Telefonica Mexico is deploying LTE in the country  through its Movistar brand. The LTE service will be available from October this year. The announcement was made by Juan Antonio Abellán, CEO of Telefónica Mexico.


Telefónica will launch the first stage of the LTE network initially in the area of Polanco, Mexico City, Zapopan, Jalisco, and San Pedro, Nuevo Leon. 

At this time the company has one of the most modern mobile networks in the country and plans to invest more than three billion dollars in next generation networks during the remainder of 2012 and during 2013.

Huawei announced availability of its Ascend P1 LTE smartphone, describing it as “the device compatible with the highest number of frequency bands”. As previously announced, it will initially be available in the UK through Everything Everywhere, with other markets set to follow.


According to the Chinese company, Ascend P1 LTE is being tested on operator networks across Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific regions. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Earlier this year, Huawei revealed aggressive smartphone targets for 2012,looking to ship 60 million devices – compared with 20 million in 2011. Much of the growth will come from its home market, as customers transition from smartphones to feature phones.

The company is already offering a non-LTE version of the Ascend P1 worldwide, and has created a TD-SCDMA market for China Mobile.
