LTE: Huawei launches the Ascend P1 LTE smartphone. Video Promo.



Huawei announced availability of its Ascend P1 LTE smartphone, describing it as “the device compatible with the highest number of frequency bands”. As previously announced, it will initially be available in the UK through Everything Everywhere, with other markets set to follow.


According to the Chinese company, Ascend P1 LTE is being tested on operator networks across Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific regions. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

Earlier this year, Huawei revealed aggressive smartphone targets for 2012,looking to ship 60 million devices – compared with 20 million in 2011. Much of the growth will come from its home market, as customers transition from smartphones to feature phones.

The company is already offering a non-LTE version of the Ascend P1 worldwide, and has created a TD-SCDMA market for China Mobile.

Huawei to announce Windows Phone 8 Ascend W1 On Sep 25th.

The device will come in black, white, blue, and pink colors and the design will be different from  Huawei Ascend Android device P1/D1. It will be marketed in the name of ”Ascend W1″ and is expected to go on sale in November to December in Europe, China and the United States.

UK: Huawei plans to invest $2 billion to expand operations.

Founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei outlined Huawei's plan on Tuesday, when he also met Prime Minister David Cameron.
"The UK is an open market, which welcomes overseas investment. I am, therefore, very pleased today to be announcing the $2 billion investment and procurement plan, promoting the development of openness and free trade," Ren said.
Cameron, who has been targeting overseas investment to help kick-start economic growth, said: "I want to see more companies invest in the UK as we work to achieve sustainable and balanced growth within our economy.
"The British government values the important relationship with China, both countries have much to offer each other and the business environment we are creating in the UK allows us to maximize this potential."
The Huawei group said it worked with all the major telecom operators and broadband service providers in Britain, where plans for the first superfast mobile broadband service were also unveiled on Tuesday.
Three Huawei products - a smartphone, a mobile wifi hub, and a mobile broadband dongle - were included in the line-up of launch devices for the new network from operator EE.

Chinese group Huawei Technologies,is the world's second-largest telecoms equipment maker.

Huawei has completed end-to-end VoLTE voice call with eSRVCC (Enhanced Single Radio Voice Call Continuity, defined in 3GPP R10) handover without any perceivable interruption for the end user, company announced. Based on an end-to-end VoLTE network architecture, the test showed how an LTE user can smoothly handover from an LTE network to a 3G WCDMA network with voice call continuity.
For this test, Huawei provided an end-to-end network solution, including radio access network and core network CS, IMS and EPC. Qualcomm provided VoLTE test mobile phones embedded with the Snapdragon™ S4 processor, the MSM8960™.
According to the 3GPP Release 8 specification, Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC) provides seamless voice services when LTE users move from the LTE network coverage to 2G/3G network coverage. eSRVCC in 3GPP R10 enhances handover performance by eliminating the need to re-establish the bearer and signaling on both sides of the call leg and only requiring an update of the local call leg and keeping the remote leg of the call unchanged. This will further optimize the handover process and limit the cause of interruption time to the re-establishment of the local call leg and ensuring a better user experience.

China: 1H 2012 smartphones market share. Samsung #1, Apple 7th.


Samsung is keeping its lead in the China smartphone market share for the 1H 2012, with 20,8%, followed by Lenovo 11%,CoolPad 10,4%, Huawei 9,8%, Nokia 9,1%, ZTE 8,4% and Apple 7,5%

 69.1 million smartphones were shipped in the China market during the first half of 2012.

There will be an estimated 160 million smartphones shipped in the China market in 2012, growing 141% from 2011, of which 28 million or 17.5% will be TD-SCDMA models, iSuppli forecast.

LTE: Huawei announced New MSA technology to improve performance in almost 30% for  LTE Advanced.

Huawei has announced a new proposal for the LTE-Advanced Multi-Stream Aggregation (MSA) technology standard for increase in data rates at the cell's edge. According to the company, a key component of Huawei's "No-Edge Networks" concept, MSA technology coordinates macro cells to improve user data rates at the cell's edge and also between heterogeneous networking scenarios to improve peak rates and simplify mobile management to ensure a consistent user experience.
The concept behind Huawei's MSA technology is that the user is always able to receive downlink data and aggregate downlink data streams from a cell or cell group with the best signal quality. A similar method applies to uplink data, where the user always transmits uplink data to a cell or cell group with the best signal quality. The uplink data streams are aggregated on the network side.
Company further outlines that MSA technology is especially suitable for macro-micro HetNets and reduces the number of handovers. It's expects MSA technology to improve system performance at the cell's edge by almost 30%.

Huawei targets 60 million smartphones shipments in 2012.

According to Digitimes Huawei Technologies, a China-based vendor of telecom equipment and mobile and home-use terminal devices, has set global target shipments of 60 million smartphones in 2012, thereby standing a chance of becoming the world's third largest vendor of smartphones, according to the company's corporate media relations vice president Scott Sykes.
Of the 60 million smartphones, 20 million units will be shipped in the China market. Huawei shipped 60 million handsets in 2011, with 20 million units of which being smartphones, Sykes indicated. Huawei has launched more than 40 models of smartphones in many markets including China, the US, Europe, Japan and India, and has set aside a marketing budget of US$200 million mainly for sales promotion of smartphones in 2012.
Huawei adopts two operational models for smartphone business, one is ODM production of customized models for mobile telecom carriers, the other is sale of own-brand models through retail channels. Huawei has a competitive advantage, that is, it has cooperated with more than 500 telecom carriers in over 140 countries through marketing telecom equipment.
In addition to Android, Huawei will offer Windows Phone models, and its smartphones are of a wide retail price range from US$100 to over US$400.
As Taiwan is a major supply source of components, Huawei hopes to set up a representative office and considers establishment of an R&D center in Taiwan. Huawei's fast growing sales of smartphones are expected to benefit its Taiwan-based partners, IC design house MediaTek and OEM maker Foxconn International Holdings.

China: Rumours:  Huawei and Nokia  to supply China Mobile with TD-LTE Windows Phones.

China Mobile is reportedly set to launch devices powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform next year, with Huawei and Nokia apparently in the frame as suppliers.

It has also been suggested that the devices will not support the operator’s TD-SCDMA 3G services, and will instead work with its fledgling TD-LTE network – a technology that is also picking up some international support.

According to Marbridge Daily, the smartphones will use a custom version of the anticipated Windows Phone 8 operating system.

The current version of Windows Phone has seen limited availability in China. Earlier this year, Nokia launched its Lumia 800C and Lumia 610C devices, for operator China Telecom, while HTC has introduced its X310e WCDMA smartphone in the market.

So far, no Windows Phone device has been made available which supports China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA 3G network – a technology which has not been deployed by any other operators globally.

According to recent reports, China Mobile is looking to begin ramping up its TD-LTE smartphone activities next year, with “more than 10” handsets available to consumers. The operator has already identified a lack of suitable devices as a hurdle.

Research firm Canalys said that China has become the world’s largest smartphone market, overtaking the US, representing 22 percent of the global market in the first quarter of 2012. In addition to devices from market leader Samsung, broader availability of Apple’s iPhone has also helped drive sales.

Portugal Telecom has selected Huawei to launch commercial LTE services in Portugal using tit's SingleRAN LTE solution. 

According to Huawei, with it's SingleRAN LTE solution, operator will integrate existing GSM networks and new LTE networks on a single platform to provide end users with seamless mobile services. 

"Portugal Telecom is pleased to have Huawei as our strategic partner for the important launch of commercial LTE services in Portugal. 

We are committed to providing our customers with the best mobile broadband experience and believe that the best way to do this is by implementing Huawei's innovative solution and drawing upon its rich commercial experience," said Alfredo Baptista, CTO of Portugal Telecom.

UK: O2 and Huawei signed up for managed services.

Chinese kit vendor Huawei has hailed its first major managed services win in the UK, signing-up O2 parent Telefonica UK on a five-year deal.


Under the agreement Huawei will be responsible for "planning and managing the core transmission, mobile access and core network build in the multi-vendor core network."

The deal also sees 56 permanent roles transfer from Telefonica UK to Huawei’s managed services arm.

“Huawei works with Telefonica in a number of markets around the world and today’s agreement means we are extending our relationship to the UK,” said Huawei UK CEO Victor Zhang. “Today’s announcement is an important first step in building a world-class managed services capability in the UK.”

Huawei claims to be the fastest growing managed services provider in the world, with more than 240 contracts in place with operators in more than 60 countries.

Huawei to take the form of touch-less, gesture-based interfaces for smartphones.

Various manufacturers are looking at different UIs and experiences beyond touch, and Huawei has announced that it is heavily investing in research and development to come with the next disruptive technology, which may take the form of touch-less, gesture-based interfaces.

In 2011, Huawei had invested $3.75 billion in R&D and the company had hired 11,000 new employees. Part of that research will be to create new gesture-based applications for its mobile products. This year, Huawei is expected to expand its investment by 20% to about $4.5 billion.

The end-result of all this spending? Three-dimensional UIs and interactions. According to John Rose, general manager for Huawei’s North America R&D, “So imagine instead of touching a smartphone, you can actually have a three-dimensional interaction with it.”

Huawei says that these gestures and capabilities would be slowly introduced and over time, we’ll have more complex UIs and interactions. For now, tablets are targeted first.

How this Technology works?


Though current touchscreen technology–like those made by Synaptics–allow for up to ten points of input meaning that the screen can recognize up to ten fingers at a time, today’s phones and tablets only allow for a limited number of fingers to be used through gestures. Part of this limitation is due to the size of the device and the size of the display, despite the growing trend for smartphones to adopt increasing display sizes. Removing the screen from the equation would mean that UIs would not longer have to be confined to the screen. Users can draw and gesture what they want to do in the air in front of the device, and their interactions would be captured by the phone’s front-facing camera.

This means that users have more ‘surface area’ to make their commands and gestures, and new commands and gestures can open up on new devices. Pinch, zoom, rotate, shift, draw, doodle–all that can now be captured with the phone’s camera, and users are only limited by the camera’s field of view.

Touch-less gestures would require a camera or some sort of sensor at its most basic form of input with the phone, and we’ve seen some early incarnation of gesture-based applications. Microsoft’s Kinect, which allows users to control their home Xbox 360 gaming experience through a camera accessory, is one such example. On the mobile side, we’ve heard Sony announcing that the Xperia Sola will allow users to use some primitive form of touch-less interactions and Pantech has the Vega Android smartphone on the market that allows for gestures. Additionally, in a recent patent application, Sony wants to place a camera behind the phone’s display to more easily and accurately capture gestures.

LTE: Intel and Huawei team up for LTE TDD solutions.



Huawei announced a partnership with Intel to “advance the development of interoperability testing and deployment of LTE TDD solutions.”


In a statement, it was said that the venture will “utilise Huawei’s expertise in LTE TDD network infrastructure technologies and Intel’s innovative and cost-optimised mobile communications platforms to expedite the maturity and development of LTE TDD.”

It was noted that by connecting directly to the Huawei infrastructure, Intel will be able to carry out end-to-end testing of its mobile platforms in a real life environment. The companies will set up a joint lab in China to support the test and implementation of TD-LTE technology.

Intel's determination to succeed in TD-LTE technology is unsurprising, given its previous backing of rival technology WiMAX, which failed to achieve mainstream commercial success. 

TD-LTE technology uses the same spectrum bands as WiMAX, and is being deployed by many operators which had previously committed to WiMAX. Meanwhile the deal strengthens Huawei's mobile broadband network offering, as the Chinese vendor attempts to compete with number one player Ericsson.

2012: Huawei and  ZTE to ship nearly 100 million smartphones for 15% global share target.


Huawei Device and ZTE, two China-based vendors, will together ship 95-100 million smartphones for a combined global market share of 15% in 2012, according to Taiwan-based makers of handset components.

Huawei shipped 16 million smartphones to rank globally 9th and ZTE 11 million for 10th place in 2011, the sources cited Gartner statistics as indicating. Huawei and ZTE have set internal shipment targets of 60 million and 35-40 million smartphones respectively for 2012.

Huawei and ZTE have produced Android handsets for own-brand sale and on a customization basis through cooperation with mobile telecom carriers in the recent two years.

 The two vendors initially lunched smartphones for sale at low to medium prices and began to make a foray into market segments of medium- to high-level smartphones in the second half of 2011.

 In 2012, Huawei and ZTE will launch smartphones equipped with quad-core processors, LTE (Long Term Evolution) functionality and large screens of over 4.5 inches as well as Windows Phone-based models.

China-based hqew.com forecasts that Huawei and ZTE will ship 57 million smartphones and 37 million ones respectively in 2012, while China-based vendors TCL Communication Technology, GiONEE, Coolpad and Lenovo will each ship more than 10 million units.

Huawei has kicked off the quad-core announcement party by revealing the Huawei Ascend D Quad in Barcelona.
Instead of being powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3 silicon, the K3V2 quad-core chip on the Huawei Ascend D Quad is custom made by the company itself and boasts up to 30% energy savings.
The Huawei Ascend D Quad crams in a 4.5in 720p screen, a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 5.1 Dolby surround sound and 8MP camera with 1080p video recording into an 8.9mm thin body, while running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
A 1,800mAh battery should keep the Huawei Ascend D Quad chugging along for longer than your average pocket powerhouse, or you can opt for the 10.9mm thin Huawei Ascend D Quad XL which boasts the same specs but packs in a whopping 2,500mAh battery which provides two to three days of usage.

ZTE, Huawei sign billion-dollar deals with US chip firms Qualcomm, Broadcom and Avago.

Chinese smartphone-maker ZTE has signed contracts worth US$5 billion with US chipset vendors Qualcomm and Broadcom, according to regulatory filings. The agreement with Qualcomm is worth US$4 billion and will cover chip supplies for the period 2012-15. The Broadcom deal is valued at US$1 billion and will cover 2012-14.


Meanwhile, ZTE’s Chinese rival Huawei handed contracts worth US$6 billion to a trio of US chip firms - Qualcomm, Broadcom and Avago – over the weekend. It said the deals “underscore Huawei’s continued commitment to the US market and… will directly and indirectly create over tens of thousands of job opportunities for US.”

According to recent figures from IDC, ZTE shipped 17.1 million mobile devices in Q4 2011 (a 4 percent global market share) making it the world's fifth-largest vendor, just behind Korean rival LG, which shipped 17.7 million (a 4.1 percent share). The Chinese firm also sold 12 million smartphones in 2011 thanks to strong sales of low-cost models for local operators such as China Unicom.

LTE: Canada: Bell signs with Huawei for expansion.

Canadian operator Bell Mobility signed a deal with Huawei for kit to support the expansion of its LTE network across the country. 

The operator launched its first LTE services in five areas last September, saying it planned to the roll the technology out across Canada in 2012.

 "Bell is dedicated to building Canada’s broadband infrastructure, investing more than any other company to deliver the latest communications technology to our country," said Bell Mobility president Wade Oosterman.

CES2012: Huawei Showcases Full Range of LTE Devices. World´s first LTE category 4.

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, is showcasing its full range of LTE devices at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2012, including its first LTE smartphone, the Huawei Ascend P1 lte. In addition, Huawei will showcase its latest LTE modem, the E3276, and its newest LTE router, the E5776. A total of nine Huawei LTE terminal devices will be on display.

Huawei is the first vendor in the world capable of supporting LTE Category 4, and both of these products offer a first look at the full capabilities of this latest standard.

Additional Huawei LTE modems on display are the E392, the world's first LTE TDD /FDD /UMTS/ GSM multi-mode USB modem; the E397B, will be launched later in Latin America; and the E398, the world's first triple-mode LTE modem.

The E589, a multi-mode router with support for LTE, 3G, and 2G, is the sole other LTE router on display.
Finally, Huawei is also showcasing the EM920—an LTE module—as well as the B593, the world's first LTE TDD wireless broadband router, offering support for both LTE TDD and FDD, downlink data rates of up to 100 Mbps, and access for up to 32 WiFi devices and desktop computers through its Ethernet port.
