Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon SDK for Android.


Qualcomm announced its Snapdragon SDK for Android, which it said offers developers and device makers “the ability to differentiate their applications on devices by exposing a new set of value-added features.”

The silicon giant said that the SDK provides access to next-generation technology and features of Snapdragon processors via APIs which are not otherwise available. These include advanced imaging and audio options, access to device sensors, and enhanced location capabilities.

According to Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm Internet Service and the company’s SVP for software strategy: “the most powerful applications in mobile are those that are tightly integrated with the underlying hardware.”

The SDK currently targets Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 8960 processor, and will support other chips “across multiple tiers” over time.

The company said a preview release is available now, and a full SDK will be available to device makers and developers in the coming months.

Today's high-end smartphones and tablets are capable of doing many intensive computing tasks, such as 3D gaming, shooting HD video, and editing photos.

 The more demanding these tasks, the harder the powerful processor works. That can result in excessive heat, which can result in lower performance and reliability issues. Over time, excessive heat can also be damaging to components, especially the battery.

LTE: Brazil : Digibras and Qualcomm Sign 3G, 4G License Agreement.


Qualcomm and  Digibras Group have entered into 3G and 4G license agreements to enable Digibras to manufacture, through its brands, 3G and 4G smartphones in Brazil. Digibras Industria do Brasil S.A.is a Brazilian consumer electronics supplier and owner of the brands CCE Info and CCE Mobi.


Under the terms of the agreements, Qualcomm has granted CCE worldwide, royalty-bearing patent licenses to develop, manufacture and sell 3G WCDMA and TD-SCDMA, and 4G OFDMA (e.g., LTE) subscriber units and routers. The royalties payable by CCE are at Qualcomm’s standard worldwide rates.

“This agreement with Qualcomm is a huge step towards improving and expanding our product offerings in the growing Brazilian broadband market. We look forward to developing highly competitive 3G/4G products and contributing to promote Brazil’s digital agenda, applying updated technology in smartphones, tablets and other smart devices,” said Roberto Sverner, president of Digibras Group.

Qualcomm and Microsoft to Provide Developers with Snapdragon-Based Windows on ARM Test PCs .


Qualcomm Incorporated  today announced that its Snapdragon™ processor will be joining Microsoft Corp.'s Windows on ARM developer seeding program. Qualcomm is working with Microsoft to provide test PCs to select developers in order to test and optimize apps for forthcoming Snapdragon-powered Windows on ARM PCs and tablets.

 This invitation-only program will combine a pre-release version of Windows on ARM with next-generation, high performance Snapdragon S4 test PCs. These test PCs are not representative of commercial form factors or the final Windows on ARM experience; they are designed to give developers early access to building and testing Windows Metro style apps on Qualcomm's latest technology.

The Windows on ARM developer seeding program will help ensure that Windows Metro style apps available in the Windows Store work great on all Windows 8-based PCs, including those with Qualcomm's ARM-compliant Snapdragon processors.

"Microsoft's development tools and the Qualcomm Snapdragon test PCs will enable developers to build and test Metro style apps for Windows on ARM PCs," said Stefan Kinnestrand, director of business planning, Windows Division, Microsoft. "Based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor, these systems will equip developers to create Metro style apps and offer a rich set of hardware peripherals that plug in and help enable seamless user experiences on the Windows on ARM platform."

Qualcomm, with Microsoft, is among those leading the shift to anytime, anywhere connectivity. The Snapdragon mobile processor will offer a combination of processing performance, rich multimedia, GPS, high-performance graphics, wireless connectivity and power efficiency with Windows on ARM.

"Qualcomm is committed to the Windows on ARM ecosystem and knows that enabling developers is a crucial factor for its success," said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of product management, computing and consumer products at Qualcomm. "We are now providing Snapdragon S4 test PCs with built-in 4G LTE, activated in some regions, to software application developers."

Qualcomm's participation in the Windows on ARM developer seeding program provides select developers with the latest generation Snapdragon S4 test PCs running a pre-release version of Windows on ARM. These test PCs contain Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor with second-generation high performance, power efficient CPU, hardware accelerated Adreno® graphics, full multimedia, GPS, sensors, and peripherals that will enable development and test of next-generation Windows Metro style apps for the coming wave of Windows on ARM PCs.

ZTE, Huawei sign billion-dollar deals with US chip firms Qualcomm, Broadcom and Avago.

Chinese smartphone-maker ZTE has signed contracts worth US$5 billion with US chipset vendors Qualcomm and Broadcom, according to regulatory filings. The agreement with Qualcomm is worth US$4 billion and will cover chip supplies for the period 2012-15. The Broadcom deal is valued at US$1 billion and will cover 2012-14.


Meanwhile, ZTE’s Chinese rival Huawei handed contracts worth US$6 billion to a trio of US chip firms - Qualcomm, Broadcom and Avago – over the weekend. It said the deals “underscore Huawei’s continued commitment to the US market and… will directly and indirectly create over tens of thousands of job opportunities for US.”

According to recent figures from IDC, ZTE shipped 17.1 million mobile devices in Q4 2011 (a 4 percent global market share) making it the world's fifth-largest vendor, just behind Korean rival LG, which shipped 17.7 million (a 4.1 percent share). The Chinese firm also sold 12 million smartphones in 2011 thanks to strong sales of low-cost models for local operators such as China Unicom.

CES2012: Qualcomm Works With Microsoft to Deliver Snapdragon S4 Processors With LTE Connectivity for Windows 8 .

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) announced at the 2012 International CES show that it is collaborating with Microsoft Corp. to demonstrate pre-release Windows 8 on Snapdragon™ S4 processors with LTE connectivity support. Demonstrated on the AT&T 4G LTE network for the first time, Windows 8 powered by Snapdragon with LTE and 3G/4G wireless support enables the connected standby experience with lower power consumption recently demonstrated by Microsoft, and provides Windows 8-based PCs including tablets, convertibles and notebooks with wireless broadband speeds and advanced connectivity solutions to help enable fast, productive experiences for users worldwide. 

Demonstrations of pre-release Windows 8 on the Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 reference hardware tablet with LTE were held during Dr. Paul E. Jacobs' opening keynote address earlier today. Jacobs' keynote was part of the Technology and Evolving Countries (TEC) Program, focused on the role mobile technology plays in global innovation and economic growth in consumer electronics.

2012: Samsung Galaxy III (3) to include own quad-core Exynos chip 4G LTE to reduce Qualcomm reliance.

By expanding component procurement channels Samsung Electronics is lowering its dependency on U.S.-based telecommunication chip giant Qualcomm in a similar manner to Apple cutting its dependency on Samsung.


As a critical partner, San Diego-based Qualcomm has been paid multi-billion dollars for telecom chipsets used in a variety of Samsung’s electronic devices, a company official said. 

But a surge in smartphones equipped with advanced long-term evolution (LTE) technologies convinces Samsung to internalize its own capability of handling LTE-based chipsets.


"We respect the help from Qualcomm. But we are currently  gradually reducing our dependence amid the rapid rise of 4G LTE smartphones,’’ a Samsung official, who asked not to be identified, said Friday.



Qualcomm representatives in Korea weren’t available for comment.

As of last year, Sony was Samsung’s biggest overseas client by buying some 7 trillion won components, followed by Apple with 6.2 trillion won, Dell with 3.4 trillion won and Hewlett-Packard with 3.2 trillion won.

Samsung officially declined to unveil its payment amounts to Qualcomm but sources who are familiar with the situation said the Korean tech powerhouse pays some 1 trillion won in royalties yearly to Qualcomm.

Qualcomm currently dominates in the entire baseband chip market accounting for roughly 80 percent, globally, according to data from market research firms.

"The situation is not different for Apple because the firm has switched to using baseband chips instead of the CDMA inventor from early this year,’’ said the Samsung official.

Samsung’s latest strategy comes after recently partnering with Japan’s wireless operator NTT DoCoMo to set up a ``fab-less semiconductor joint venture.’’ The chips produced from the venture will make use of 4G LTE and LTE-advanced standards.

NTT DoCoMo will provide technologies for telecommunications, while other partners ― NEC and Panasonic ― will design chips with those technologies.

Samsung will manufacture the chips on a foundry or contract basis, Samsung said in a statement.

In the so-called `3G ear,’ Qualcomm is untouchable, however, the 4G LTE market is new, that’s why Samsung decided to join the venture with an attempt to have more patents in 4G LTE chipsets,’’ the Samsung official said.

Samsung Electronics has finished testing advanced Exynos chipsets to be used in the upcoming Galaxy S III, according to company officials.

The new quad-core Exynos will also support 4G LTE functions. This is ultimately a blow for Qualcomm as Samsung had used Qualcomm’s one-chip solution that combined telecoms, 3G and 4G LTE functions.

"Nothing has been decided yet, though Samsung is mulling the possibility of commercializing the Galaxy S III equipped with our new 3G-, and 4G-backed chips from 2012,’’ said the official.

A Samsung spokesman declined to confirm this. 

Patents keep gaining significance as leading tech companies are entangled in heavy fights. Samsung is in a severe legal tussle with Apple in 10 different countries.

"Samsung shouldn’t suddenly lower it dependency on Qualcomm. In the case, Samsung does so, however, it’s all about patents especially in the world of the so-called smart devices,’’ said an official from Samsung’s chip plant in South Korea, who asked not to be identified as he wasn’t given the right to officially speak to the media.

However in this point maybe Amazon will like to discuss the option to build the hardware with Foxconn, who will make the next  gen 7 inch Kindle Fire.

HP for the mobile OS software, webOS, with stunning features like multitasking and synergy.

Three companies together in a Joint Venture company, willing to share each other, their expertise.

2.-Intel in talks and Qualcomm is back for webOS.  
A VentureBeat source says that Intel has just begun discussions with HP and that Qualcomm is still in the running for Palm.

3.-Final webOS decision in December.
A final decision by HP Ceo MegWhitman might come in December as we reported before:
