The Amazon app is available for free in the Windows Store and it offers support not only for 32- and 64-bit versions of the operating system, but also for Windows RT and, consequently, for Surface RT.

The feature list is at least impressive, as the Amazon for Windows 8 app allows you to quickly search for products, read product descriptions and reviews, add products to the shopping car or to the wish list and even purchase products.

In January, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in two versions and pricing will start at $899:

China: Microsoft`s new smartphone will be launched in 2013.

According to Chinatechnews Suning  stores a China company who started to work with Microsoft in 2007 and was its channel in the debut of Windows 7, recieved the visit of Jean-Philippe Courtois, Microsoft's global executive vice president and Microsoft worldwide president, in Suning`s new headquarters in Nanjing and implemented comprehensive talks with Zhang Jindong, chairman of the Chinese consumer electronic retail chain.

The two companies reached an agreement on their comprehensive cooperation over the next few years, and they expressed cooperation intent in various sectors, including e-commerce, product sales, and marketing. 

Based on the agreement, Microsoft's new smartphone, which will be launched in 2013 (before rumors said mid 2013), will be first sold via the retail channels of Suning.

Microsoft said that it will consider Suning as its prior sales channels for these two new products.

In other rumors Foxconn has already secured a manufacturing deal with Microsoft for the Surface phone,

The software giant Microsoft announced Wednesday that it will build its first laboratory in Brazil for advanced technology in Latin America and fourth in the world, as part of an investment plan of $ 100 million to make in the next four years. 

This venture, a leading company in its 23 years of operations in Brazil, "will be a cornerstone for the future of innovation at Microsoft," said Hernán Rincón, president of Microsoft Latin America, in a ceremony attended the Brazilian ministers of Education, Aloizio Mercadante, and Science, Technology and Innovation, Marco Antonio Raupp.

São Paulo, November 7, 2012 - In a ceremony Brasilia, after meeting with the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marco Antonio Raupp, and Education Minister Mercadante, Microsoft announced an investment of $ 200 million in Brazil to boost national competitiveness through research and development sites . 

Among a series of planned initiatives highlight the establishment of a Country Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL, its acronym in English) Microsoft Research.

Microsoft is reported to be working on manufacturing its own smartphone to accompany its recently launched self-made ‘Surface’ tablet.

According to sources at the Wall Street Journal, the software giant is working with component suppliers in Asia on its own smartphone design.

The device under consideration is reported to have a four- to five-inch screen, which would pitch it in competition with the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III.  But sources warned that it was not certain that the phone would reach mass production.

Microsoft launched the ‘Surface’ tablet earlier this year. The move to manufacture its own hardware is seen as an attempt to mimic Apple, which is able to closely integrate software and hardware.

However, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Monday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer declined to comment on the speculation, saying he was committed to third-party vendors running the firm’s Windows Phone software.

"We're quite happy this holiday season going to market hard with Nokia, Samsung and HTC," said Ballmer. "Whether we had a plan to do something different or we didn't have a plan I wouldn't comment in any dimension."

Microsoft last attempted its own phone range in 2010 with the ‘Kin’ line of youth-oriented smartphones, though this was quickly killed off.

Microsoft officially unveiled its Windows Phone 8 platform yesterday, a device operating system that is set to power new smartphones from Nokia, HTC and Samsung. While the platform was previewed in June 2012, the company used an event yesterday to showcase several new features that have not previously been revealed.

It also provided an update on its app ecosystem, stating that it is approaching the point where 46 out of the top 50 titles available for other platforms have been ported to Windows Phone – which Joe Belfiore, corporate VP for the company, described as “huge progress for us”.

New features showcased by Belfiore included “Kid’s Corner”, which it describes as a “worry-free way to share your phone with your kids” by limiting the features available to prevent accidental misuse; and Rooms, which enables users to create private groups with which to share information – with some features also made available to users of smartphones powered by other OS platforms.

Also new is Data Sense, which uses compression to minimise the amount of data transferred; offloads data to Wi-Fi where appropriate; and adjusts usage when nearing data bundle limits.

Belfiore said that this feature will be made available in partnership with mobile operator partners, and is “rolling out with mobile operators starting with our [November] launch and going into 2013”. The first named operator supporting it is Verizon Wireless.

Windows Phone 8 is also being positioned as “the perfect companion for your Windows devices and your Xbox”, in partnership with the Skydrive cloud storage platform. This will enable users to share images, video and music between different terminals, with Belfiore adding that “it’s the first cloud service that fully integrates and syncs your Office documents, so you can access them from any of your devices”.

As with the earlier Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 7.5 platforms, the latest version of the platform centres around a “tiles” interface, which can be used to push personal information to the home screen of the device. These can also be used by app developers to deliver content, and information can now also be pushed to the device’s lock screen.

Belfiore noted: “I would say that the state of the art in the core smartphone experience hasn’t really evolved much in the five years since its inception. If you think about the predominant user experience on most of the smartphones people are using today, it was standardised by Apple and the iPhone, and essentially that same interface was copied by Android and Android phones, and it really hasn’t evolved all that much. The static grid of icons has been the standard on smartphones.”

Devices powered by Windows Phone 8 are set for launch next month. In a US-focused release, it was said that “major mobile operators will start selling Windows Phone 8 in the coming weeks”, with Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile USA on board.

Microsoft was less forthcoming on the rollout plans for international markets.

How to Upgrade:

Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will determine whether your PC is ready for Windows 8 and provide you with a compatibility report. If your PC is ready for Windows 8, Upgrade Assistant will walk you through the steps to purchase, download, and install. Learn more about Upgrade Assistant.
