Amazon Releases “Air Patriots” Game for Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Android Devices, iPhone, and iPad.

Amazon Game Studios Releases “Air Patriots” for Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, Android Devices, iPhone, and iPad.
Defend your territory from enemy tanks! Amazon Game Studios’ first game for mobile devices combines fun, strategy, and defense-play with intuitive airplane touch controls resulting in addicting “I can’t stop playing!” action

Play on all your favorite devices including the new Kindle Fire family, Android devices, iPhone and iPad

Kindle Fire gamers can use GameCircle to track achievements and scores, making Air Patriots play on the Kindle Fire more social

Following the release of Amazon’s first-ever social game, Living Classics, Amazon Game Studios today announced the availability of “Air Patriots,” its first-ever game for mobile devices. The game is available now for Kindle Fire, Android devices, iPhone, iPad, and is free to all customers. Learn more at games.amazon.com.

Air Patriots is a new kind of tower defense game with fun and unique gameplay requiring strategic positioning of an arsenal of planes to push back an enemy tank invasion. In Air Patriots, players directly control a squadron of military planes by using their finger to draw the paths the planes will follow in order to engage the enemy. Unlike other tower defense games where defense bases are stationary, in Air Patriots players can adjust their strategy on the fly. Simply draw a new flight path for your planes, and you redeploy firepower to where it is needed most.

"When we created Air Patriots we wanted to make a game that was easy and engaging, and the simplicity of drawing paths for planes was something we thought would appeal to players,” said Ernie Ramirez, Executive Producer at Amazon Game Studios. “We think customers will find Air Patriots both familiar and fresh, with a degree of challenge that keeps them engaged and enthused to play more. We are very excited to bring Amazon customers Air Patriots today, and Amazon Game Studios looks forward to bringing our fans even more great games in the future."

Air Patriots uses Amazon GameCircle on Kindle Fire to track both achievements and high scores, allowing players to compete for strategic superiority. Air Patriots also supports Whispersync for games to ensure that progress is saved in the cloud whether it’s played on the Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD. Players can even switch back and forth between multiple Kindle devices as they continue their quest to eliminate the enemy.

Available today as a free download on Amazon Appstore for Android, Google Play, and Apple’s App Store. Air Patriots boasts rich visuals for HD compatible devices, including Kindle Fire HD.

Low production yield rate of in-cell touch panel technology could hinder iPhone shipments.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Low production yield rate of  in-cell touch panel technology could hinder iPhone  shipments.

Following the launch of the iPhone 5, the in-cell touch panel technology adopted by the Apple smartphone has generated mixed views from market observers. Some observers say inc-cell touch panels still have a low production yield rate and may not be widely adopted by other vendors in the next 2-3 years, but others believe the technology has set a new standard for smartphones.

The iPhone 5's display panel is being produced by LG Display, Japan Display and Sharp. Enhanced specifications with the device's panel, which include allowing the phone to be lighter, thinner and maintain high resolution, reportedly have caused yield rate issues. Some observers have pointed out that issues with the panels could hinder iPhone shipments.

But some market analysts estimate that iPhone 5 sales will reach 40 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Skype for iPhone and iPad updated with Photo Sharing

"millions of people use Skype for iPhone or Skype for iPad each month." These users have requested features, and Microsoft has obliged with one of the most requested feature: Photo Sharing. They've also updated the apps for speed

"In addition, we've made some improvements to the performance of the app, as we know many of you want to keep Skype running on your mobile devices all the time." The new feature allows users to send photos that were taken with a user's iPad or iPhone directly to friends and family via Skype. There is no file-size limit.

Over the last couple of releases, we've started to improve the overall performance of Skype's mobile apps. The prior release began to make them less battery hungry when running in the background, so you can answer Skype calls throughout the day when they come in. And, as you'll be able to keep Skype open, you can respond to or send IMs to friends and colleagues all day long. In addition, this latest release improves the app start and the contact list loads even faster, so you can do all the things you love to do with Skype more quickly.

The updates are available in the Apple App Store. You can download the iPhone app here and the iPad app here. The new Skype for iPad update supports any version of the iPad. The new Skype for iPhone update supports the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4/4S, 3rd Generation iPod touch, or any version of the iPad. iOS 4.3 or higher is required regardless of device.

China: Local firms are primed with cheap phones to squeeze market share from Apple.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.
By China Daily.

China: Local firms are primed with cheap phones to squeeze market share from Apple.

Lei Jun, founder and CEO of China's mobile company Xiaomi, speaks at a launch ceremony of Xiaomi Phone 2 in Beijing August 16, 2012

In China's booming smartphone market, which is set this year to overtake the United States as the world's largest, a host of little-known local firms are primed with cheap phones to squeeze market share from US giant Apple Inc's iPhone.

In the latest local challenge to the iPhone, Xiaomi Technology on Thursday launched the successor to its popular MiOne (MI) smartphone. The MI2 has specifications that exceed those of the iPhone 4S and sells for less than half the price.

Smartphones from Xiaomi - founded only two years ago but already worth more than Blackberry maker Research in Motion , according to private market valuations - have proved so popular they sell out in minutes after going on sale online. The company, founded by CEO Lei Jun, said last month its first-half revenue was close to $1 billion as it sold more than 3 million phones.
Mirroring Apple's annual worldwide developers conference (WWDC), where devotees would pay to listen to Steve Jobs showcasing new products, the informally-clad Lei charged Xiaomi fans 199 yuan ($31.30) to attend the Beijing launch, with the proceeds going to charity. Over 1,000 people flocked to the event.
While iPhone sales will increase in China, Apple's market share may stagnate or even dip as the market's changing demographics mean the iPhone flourishes in just a handful of wealthy Chinese cities, analysts said.
Industry researcher IDC estimates that in China last year, smartphones costing less than $200 made up 40 percent of shipments, while devices costing $700 and more accounted for 11 percent of the market.
"The sweet spot of affordability in China is 800-1,500 yuan ($130-$240)," said Michael Clendenin, managing director of Shanghai-based consultancy RedTech Advisors. "The 'Lao Bai Xing', or man in the street, is going to go for these mid-tier phones."
Li Xing, 35, lauding the Xiaomi phone's signal capabilities at the launch event, said: "I preferred not to use Apple because I didn't want my phone to be a luxury product, it's just a phone."
The MI2, which goes on sale in October at 1,999 yuan ($310), has a quad-core processor, 8 mega-pixel camera and a voice-assistant similar to Apple's Siri.
"Other phones are just phones, but a Xiaomi phone is very human-friendly," said Chen Zhen, 31.
Apple releases a single iPhone model a year at a price - around $800 - equivalent to about two months pay for an urban Chinese, who make up half of China's 1.3 billion population. Analysts say the real growth in China is in cheaper smartphones where a wide variety of models at different prices appeal to first-time buyers.
"Apple isn't going to rule China, simply because of the limited models they have and the price points they target," said TZ Wong, an analyst with IDC. "Based on these two factors, we do not think Apple will be the No. 1 smartphone player in China."
Apple ranked second in January-March smartphone shipments in China, with 17.3 percent market share, trailing Samsung Electronics' 19.2 percent, according to research firm, Gartner.
iOS to slip to 3rd
Apple's market share by volume has been on a downtrend, and the share of the market commanded by its iOS mobile operating system is expected to slip to third place by 2016 from second earlier this year, according to Gartner analyst Sandy Shen - below Google Inc's Android and Microsoft Corp's  Windows.
Apple's iPhone sales in China, its second-largest market, stumbled in April-June on inventory adjustments with the launch of the iPhone 4S. That extra inventory meant resellers didn't need to buy as many iPhones during the quarter, and the expected launch later this year of the iPhone 5, with enhanced Chinese language capabilities, also likely held back orders.
"Apple's market share is pretty stable. It will be flat over the next five years. Although volume-wise it's increasing, that's because the total market is growing," Shen said.
Research firms IDC and Gartner predict China's smartphone shipments could hit 140 million this year, topping those in the United States.
High-spec, Low-cost
Growth is driven largely by smartphones made by ZTE Corp  , Lenovo Group and smaller private firms such as Xiaomi, Gionee and Meizu Technology.
Meizu phones, which sell in China and Hong Kong for 1,500 yuan, are feted by Western technology blogs for offering high-end smartphones at bargain basement prices.
Offering even cheaper models, Alibaba Group, Shanda Interactive and Baidu Inc have all this year launched smartphones for under 1,000 yuan. Baidu's phone, made with partners, retails at 899 yuan ($140), while Alibaba's waterproof smartphone, made with Haier Electronics Group , costs 999 yuan.
"For those with an iPhone or Samsung ... it's just a replacement cycle. But for many people who haven't got their first smartphone, those are the people who will get cheap smartphones," Shen said. ($1 = 6.3625 Chinese yuan)

Apple`s Passbook app “the simplest way to get all your passes in one place”

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Apple`s Passbook app “the simplest way to get all your passes in one place

Apple has announced an app called Passbook as one of the new features of iOS6. The app is a means for users to hold all their loyalty cards, tickets, vouchers and coupons in a single place on their mobile device. Passbook is a step towards a mobile wallet although the company made no mention of a payment mechanism such as NFC.

The company describes Passbook as being “the simplest way to get all your passes in one place”. It will enable users to scan their iPhone or iPod touch to use coupons, concert tickets or hotel entry.  Other examples of what users could carry in the app include season tickets for sports events and airline tickets.

The app will also be location-based, says Apple. It will automatically display the correct pass based on a specific time or location. Apple gives the example of a loyalty card for a regularly visited coffee shop. In fact, Passbook will enable users to make payments via Starbucks' popular app (although Passbook is not mobile payments service for Apple itself). Or the app will alert the user for instance if there is a last-minute gate change at an airport.

Passbook launch partners include Starbucks, Fandango, Target, Amtrak, United, the Apple Store, MLB.com, and W Hotels.

However Apple’s announcement made no mention of NFC. In the past, there has been speculation that the company would announce an NFC capability for the iPhone although that has lessened recently. The Passbook announcement will likely put it back on the agenda.

The new app is among the new features on iOS6 which will be available to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users this autumn, the company says.  Other features will include a new maps app, an update to Siri and Facebook integration for contacts and calendar. The new features were announced at its WWDC event for developers.

In addition to being compatible with Apple products, the GL10 features a small size, intuitive design and easy-to-use feature set that produces Polaroid Classic Border, full bleed and contemporary 3x4” photos in less than one minute – making it a portable photo booth that allows you to bring the Polaroid magic wherever you go.

Marrying the convenience of today’s digital images and the original Polaroid instant experience, the newest 15-ounce GL10 printer uses Wi-Fi to connect to Apple iPhone or iPad digital mobile devices and provides the classic Polaroid instant experience using the ZINK® Technology:

The patented ZINK Paper® is an advanced composite material with cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded inside. • Aesthetically Pleasing and Environmentally Responsible: Designed for both form and function for use both in the present and future. ZINK Technology requires no messy ribbons, toner or inkjet cartridges to throw away.

Offered by C&A Licensing, LLC, an authorized Polaroid licensee, the Polaroid GL10 Instant Mobile Printer features elegant brushed metal and textured surfaces with rubberized accents, the simple, clean design and straight forward feature set of the GL10 makes instant photo printing effortless. Making it easy to create, print and share on the go, the rechargeable battery of the GL10 prints up to 40 images.

Q1 2012: Apple stronger than expected.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Q1 2012: Apple stronger than expected.

Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones - which accounts for about half its revenue - in the March quarter, outpacing the 30 million or so expected by Wall Street analysts.

Margins blew past forecasts - helped by lower-than-expected commodity costs - while a five-fold iPhone sales surge in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong bolstered revenue in the region to $7.9 billion.

"That shows they are able to maintain their pricing without compromising on growth," said Morningstar analyst Michael Holt.

Apple sold 11.8 million iPads, the latest version of which hit store shelves in mid-March. That compared with the average forecast of up to 13 million.

The consumer electronics giant said its fiscal second-quarter revenue rose 59 percent to $39.2 billion, better than the average analyst estimate of $36.8 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net income rose to $11.6 billion, or $12.30 a share, from $6 billion, or $6.40 per share, a year earlier. That also outpaced Wall Street's target of $10.04 a share.

Apple's stock gained more than 7 percent to $601, from a close of $560.28 on Nasdaq. That is still far below its intraday high of $644 reached this month.

Apple's initial strategy of partnering a single mobile carrier in China may have backfired, where rival Samsung has opened up a huge lead in smartphone market, reports say.

News wire Bloomberg in its report, said that the iPhone had a 7.5 pecent share of China's smartphone sales, while Samsung had more than three times that at 24.3 percent. It noted that this made Apple the fifth largest smartphone seller in the country, while Samsung was number one.

This comes as Apple got a second partner in China last week, China Telecom to sell its mobilephones, in an effort to close the gap. It had previously exclusively sold the handset through China Unicom.

According to news site Business Insider, the largest telco China Mobile is expected to wait until Apple released an LTE version for the country by the end of 2012. It noted that an estimated 15 million "jail-broken" iPhones are already used on China Mobile's network, even without the carrier actually selling the phone.

Bloomberg pointed out that Apple chose not to make a phone with China Mobile because the operator used a unique 3G standard called TD-SCDMA.
