Japan: NTT Docomo launches the Samsung Galaxy SIII α  SC-03E with Android 4.1

With an Exynos 4412 1.6GHz quad-core processor inside and with 2GB of RAM, 4.8-inch touchscreen display on the front, the 8-megapixel camera on the back, and the 32GB internal storage, complemented by a microSD memory card slot. 

The phone also comes with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, NFC, 4G capabilities, and support for various local wireless services in Japan. 

Running under Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, the handset was made available in two colors, namely Titanium Gray, Sapphire Black.

Japan: NTT Docomo launched automatic free voice translation service.

Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo has launched an automatic translation service for voice calls. The LTE/3G-compatible service provides rapid translation between Japanese and Chinese, English and Korean.

The translation is processed by the network, not through the handset or an application, and then the translation provided through voice synthesis.

The service can be used two ways: phone-to-phone or face-to-face. From late November, face‐to‐face interpretation will be available between Japanese and ten other languages. To use the service, the caller needs the free Android app and the service is also provided for free but voice and data charges apply.

Japan: SoftBank to acquire EMOBILE.


Japan’s Softbank is to acquire smaller rival EMOBILE in a deal set to establish it as the country’s second-largest mobile operator behind NTT Docomo.

Softbank is to acquire JPY180.2 billion (US$2.3 billion) of stock in eAccess, the firm behind mobile broadband specialist EMOBILE.

According to Reuters, the JPY52,000 per share deal represents a premium of more than three times eAccess' closing price of JPY15,070 on Friday.

“We are paying more than triple the current trading price of eAccess because the benefits come from the company's existing customer base,” Softbank Mobile’s charismatic founder Masayoshi Son told reporters today. “We do not think our shareholders will view this as a bad tie-up at all."

It is estimating total synergies of JPY360 billion, made up of customer base expansion (JPY200 billion), network sharing (JPY110 billion) and “other management efficiencies” (JPY50 billion).

The deal will also see Softbank inherit valuable new spectrum to support both its 4G rollout and major new devices such as the iPhone 5.

It noted that the combination of EMOBILE’s 10,000 base stations at 1.7GHz with its existing 20,000 base stations at 2.1GHz would give it an estate of 30,000 “LTE base stations available for the iPhone 5.”

Softbank says it had 34.9 million subscribers at end-August, while EMOBILE had 4.2 million. The combination of the two would give the expanded firm 39.1 million – a 28.8 percent market share - enough to surpass KDDI on 35.9 million (26.5 percent). Market leader Docomo has 60.6 million subscribers, a 44.7 percent share.

Japan: Tokyo court ruled Samsung did not infringe Apple`s patents.


A court in Tokyo has ruled that Samsung Electronics did not infringe on patents held by Apple, a victory for the South Korean company.
The patent was related to transferring media content between devices.
This is one of many cases brought to courts around the world by the two smartphone market leaders.
"We welcome the court's decision, which confirmed our long-held position that our products do not infringe Apple's intellectual property," said Samsung in a statement to the BBC.
Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji dismissed the case filed by Apple in August, finding that Samsung was not in violation of Apple patents related to synchronising music and video data between devices and servers.

NTT  Docomo, Fujitsu, NEC create chip Joint Venture.

NTT Docomo announced a semiconductor joint venture with Fujitsu, NEC and Fujitsu Semiconductor, to “focus on the development and sales of semiconductor products with built-in modem functions for use in communications equipment.”

In a statement, it was said that the company, Access Network Technology, will “bring together technologies from each of the companies to develop industry-leading communications platform products, and will provide customers with highly competitive products to meet their needs”.

The venture is set to begin operations in August, and will be 52.8 percent owned by Fujitsu, 19.9 percent owned by Docomo, 17.8 percent owned by NEC, and 9.5 percent owned by Fujitsu Semiconductor.

Daedalus renders attacks on networks visible in real time. The sphere in the center represents the Internet, and the circles moving around it represent networks under observation. The state of an attack is shown using 3D graphics, and can be viewed from any perspective.
"We previously created a system called nicter for observing cyber-attacks. We also built an observation network in Japan, called the Darknet Observation Network, to cover IP addresses not used in nicter. Now, we're observing 190,000 IP addresses in Japan. Daedalus is an alert system using that observation network."
Today's cyber-attacks breach boundary defenses from inside and outside organizations, including the spread of malware via USB memory sticks and mail attachments, as well as zero-day exploits. So, using Daedalus together with conventional boundary systems is expected to improve network security within organizations.
"The blue part in this organization shows IP addresses that are used, and the black part shows addresses that are not used. This character indicates an alert. When you click on the alert, a message showing the cause appears. In this case, only two packets have been sent. But because the packets go from an address that's used to an address that's not used, this indicates that a virus is starting to spread within the organization."
"If this kind of situation is input to our observation network, we can observe it, and find out things like that. The system automatically sends an alert, saying, 'This IP address of yours is spreading a virus using this protocol at this time'."
The technology for this system will be transferred to clwit, which will include it in a commercial alert service called SiteVisor. NICT also provides the system free of charge to educational institutions where nicter sensors can be installed.

Japanese technology titan NEC has unveiled a gadget that allows users to control their TV, mobile phone or tablet computer using a virtual input device.

The company said a camera that recognises three-dimensional shapes and their movements will combine with a projector that could show the image of an input device -- such as a keyboard -- on almost any surface.

Users can then gesture at the projected image to move an electronic file or play a video, with the movement of their hand relayed back to the device they want to control.

"With the recent expansion of cloud-based services, information terminals have become increasingly diversified, ranging from PCs to smartphones and tablet devices," a company statement said Tuesday.

"However, the presentation of information is limited to the displays on such devices, and operation needs to be performed with the use of an input device such as a remote control, mouse or touchscreen.

"Using this technology, multiple devices can be controlled based on a user's movements, without the use of an input device, producing interfaces that boast more natural interaction."

NEC said it hoped to develop the technology so that it could be used with devices that do not have displays, including lights and air conditioners, raising the prospect of a home controlled largely by waving.

NEC Develops Technology Enabling Gesture-Based Control of Information

Tokyo, May 15, 2012 - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the development of an interactive technology that allows the control of information through a combination of user gestures and the display of images from a projector.


The newly-developed technology is controlled through the combination of a movable camera, which measures and recognizes three-dimensional shapes, and a compact image projector. In addition to enabling the gesture-based control of information between devices, without the use of an input device such as a remote control or mouse, images that facilitate input, such as a keyboard image, can be flexibly displayed in a wide range of locations. This results in natural interactions that are intuitive and allow users to easily see the effect of their actions.

The features of this newly-developed technology are described below.

1. Achieves intuitive operation by integrating gesture-based input and image projection
A camera that measures three-dimensional shapes is used to recognize the movement and shape of the hands and fingers as control input. This means that tasks such as the movement of data between terminals and the control of devices can be performed without the use of an input device such as a remote control, mouse or keyboard. Further, images from the compact image projector that facilitate input, such as a keyboard or selected photo, can be projected onto a variety of surfaces such as a desk or a user's hand, achieving natural interaction where the results of operations are readily understood. 

2. Achieves a wide range of high-precision control through a movable camera and projector.

The movable measurement camera and projector are controlled in an integrated fashion. As a result, high-precision input and images can be projected while tracking a user's gesture-based movements over a wide range. Additionally, the locations of multiple distant devices can be specified to enable control. 

With the recent expansion of cloud-based services, information terminals have become increasingly diversified, ranging from PCs to smartphones and tablet devices. However, the presentation of information is limited to the displays on such devices, and operation needs to be performed with the use of an input device such as a remote control, mouse or touchscreen.

Using this technology, multiple devices can be controlled based on a user's movements, without the use of an input device, producing interfaces that boast more natural interaction. Looking ahead, NEC will also develop a range of applied technologies, such as the free gesture-based control of digital signage, and the operation of lights, air conditioners and other devices not equipped with displays.

Japanese operator SoftBank has announced that Ericsson will build its LTE network in Japan’s major cities, such as Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya and covering more than half the country’s population. 

The deal is the Swedish infrastructure company’s largest LTE contract in Japan. SoftBank is also working with Nokia Siemens Networks, which will help build its FDD-LTE network and expand its HSPA+ network.

Japan: DeNA to develop and distribute Disney games.

Japanese mobile social gaming company DeNA partnered to offer games based on Disney and Marvel comics and characters via its Mobage platform.

 The first game, Disney Party, was launched on 28 March on the Mobage network in Japan, which reaches more than 35 million people.

 Disney Fantasy Quest is due to follow this week, with a third Marvel-based title due in the summer. Localised versions of the games will be launched on Mobage Global (North America and Europe), Daum Mobage (South Korea) and Mobage China in the summer.

Although there are no details regarding the smartphone’s pricing options, the carrier confirms Galaxy Note SC-05D will be available at all NTT Docomo dealers starting April 6.


Aside from the huge 5.3-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (800 x 1280 pixels) resolution, NTT Docomo’s Galaxy Note offers users LTE (Xi) support, allowing for download speeds up to 75Mbps.


Docomo NEXT series GALAXY Note SC-05D device is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core APQ8060 processor and packs 16GB of internal memory, 1GB of RAM and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 2GB memory card included).


The phone is equipped with the same 2500 mAh Li-Ion battery, which is rated by the carrier for up to 310 hours of standby time (350 hours in 3G mode) or up to 9 hours of talk time (7 hours in 3G mode).

Obviously, the smartphone boasts the usual S Pen stylus that goes along with “S Notes” application, which enables handwriting input and illustration paste-clipping of a photo.

On the back, the device boasts an impressive 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording, while in the front there’s a secondary 1.3-megapixel camera for video calls.

NTT Docomo customers will be able to get the Samsung Galaxy Note SC-05D only in ceramic white. 


However, the carrier might add another color scheme for the Galaxy Note SC-05D later this year.

LTE: Japan: EMOBILE has launched the second LTE network in the country.

Japanese operator EMOBILE has launched the second LTE network in the country. Based on FDD-LTE, the network offers download speeds of up to 75Mb/s and upload speeds of up to 25Mb/s in some areas.

The operator plans to cover 99 percent of the population in Japan’s major cities – such as Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka - by the end of June, before extending coverage further. By the end of March, the company aims for the network to reach 40 percent of the total population, rising to 70 percent a year later.

The company will initially offer two LTE-capable Wi-Fi routers and a USB stick capable of connecting to the network.

EMOBILE joins Japan number one NTT Docomo in providing LTE services to consumers with the latter launching its Xi network in December 2010. Fellow operator SoftBank meanwhile started to offer high-speed wireless broadband services in February using an evolution of Japan’s PHS cordless network, called AXGP. SoftBank said the technology is very close fo TD-LTE and is capable of download speeds of up to 76Mb/s.

Japan: 3 main mobile operators to join forces on NFC tech.

Japan’s three main mobile operators are to join forces on NFC technology in a bid to provide their customers with a contactless solution that will work internationally and in harmony with Japan’s local m-payments platform.


Announced today, the Japan Mobile NFC Consortium is a venture between operators NTT Docomo, KDDI, and SoftBank.

While all three operators already offer ‘Osaifu- Keitai’ (wallet phone) mobile services based on Sony’s FeliCa contactless smartcard platform, the technology has gained little traction outside of Japan where the NFC standard is dominant.

“Overseas, mobile operators and service providers are increasingly adopting Type A and Type B standards to develop growing markets for NFC services. In view of this worldwide trend, the consortium intends to work with mobile industry groups in Japan, including service suppliers and handset manufacturers, to incorporate compatibility with the Type A and B standards in the Japanese mobile ecosystem.”

The consortium said it aims to “free mobile users in Japan, both residents and international travelers, from having to concern themselves about different NFC service standards,” and “create an environment in Japan where service providers can offer efficient, low-cost NFC services based on common standards and rules adopted by the three mobile operators.”
